Set above the Val d'Orcia near Montalcino, Castello di San Bartolomeo rises in weathered golden stone, its early-Renaissance facade catching the last light at sunset. A cypress-lined drive climbs the hillside toward the gates, vineyard rows falling away on either side toward the valley floor.
Inside, a grand hall holds a stone fireplace beneath a coffered ceiling, antique furnishings gathered against walls that have stood for centuries. Below, a vaulted stone cellar holds row upon row of oak barrels, the cool air carrying the scent of aging wine. Bedrooms pair four-poster beds with exposed stone walls, deep-set windows framing the valley beyond.
Outside, the estate's 700 hectares hold a number of working vineyards, sangiovese vines turning out DOCG wine under the Tuscan sun. A long terrace hosts tastings with the estate's own winemaker, glasses and decanters set out over views of the rolling hills. A stone courtyard nearby holds an old well and potted olive trees beneath an arched loggia. The valley's centuries of vineyards and castles stretch out in every direction, gold light settling over the vines as the sun drops toward the hills.
