Miami Basel Art Festival: Insider's Guide

For one week each December, the center of the art world moves to a barrier island off the coast of Florida. The fair's official name is Art Basel Miami Beach, though most who attend call it Miami Basel, and the constellation of fairs, museum openings, and private dinners around it is known as Miami Art Week. The 2026 edition runs from December 4 to 6 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, preceded by two preview days reserved for invited guests. This guide follows the week as collectors and their guests live it: when to arrive, what has changed on the floor this year, which satellite fairs deserve a morning, and why so many regulars choose private villas in Miami as their base.
Miami Basel 2026 at a Glance
Art Basel Miami Beach opens to the public on Friday, December 4, and closes on Sunday, December 6, with hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Wednesday, December 2, and Thursday, December 3, are preview days, open by invitation only. The venue, as always, is the Miami Beach Convention Center at 1901 Convention Center Drive.
This year's exhibitor line-up brings together 272 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and territories. The main Galleries sector holds 204 of them. Around it sit three project-based sectors: Nova, with 20 galleries showing new work; Positions, with 12 solo presentations by emerging artists; and Survey, where 18 galleries present 16 historically focused projects. Zero 10, the fair's platform for art of the digital era, adds 22 galleries and platforms, four of which also show in Galleries.
The scale of the audience is considerable. The 2025 edition welcomed more than 80,000 visitors across its preview and public days, among them representatives of more than 240 museums and foundations. After a year without an in-person edition, the fair returned in 2021 to 60,000 visitors, and attendance has since settled between 75,000 and 80,000.

Why Collectors Choose a Villa for Art Week
Art Week is as much a social calendar as a commercial one. The conversations that matter often happen after the Convention Center closes: at a dinner for twelve, over coffee before a studio visit, on a terrace at the end of a long preview day. A private residence makes room for all of it. There is a table to host at, a chef who knows the menu in advance, a driver waiting at the gate, and, in the right location, a dock from which the evening can continue on the water.
Our collection of luxury villa rentals is assembled by invitation, and fewer than one percent of the residences we review are accepted. In Miami that means bayfront estates on the Venetian Islands, contemporary residences on Miami Beach, and garden compounds in Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, each inspected in person under our acceptance process. During a week when the city is at its fullest, they offer a measure of quiet and discretion that the hotels along Collins Avenue cannot.
What Is New on the Floor in 2026
The most significant change this year is the floor itself. Art Basel Miami Beach is the only one of the organization's fairs staged on a single level, and for 2026 the plan has been substantially redrawn. The fair occupies roughly 12 percent less floor space, and the Galleries sector has about 10 percent fewer exhibitors. Four hospitality plazas replace the previous five, which lengthens the sightlines across the hall.
For returning visitors, the practical consequence is that the blue-chip galleries, once grouped in a single area, are now distributed throughout the floor. Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, White Cube, and Pace Gallery no longer share a neighborhood. The familiar habit of working one corner of the hall on the first morning no longer applies. It is better to build a route from the gallery list, booth by booth, and to allow time for the presentations in between.
Several details reward attention. More than 30 galleries are taking part for the first time, most of them in Nova, Positions, and Survey. Five countries are represented for the first time: The Bahamas, Estonia, Georgia, Ghana, and Hungary. More than two-thirds of the galleries operate spaces in the Americas, and Brazil again sends the third-largest national contingent. Within the main sector, 28 Kabinett presentations, small curated projects set inside exhibitors' booths, are easy to walk past and often hold some of the most considered work at the fair. Zero 10 returns with Generation, its largest presentation to date: 19 projects by artists including Refik Anadol, Jon Rafman, and Sarah Meyohas.
How the Preview Days Work
The two preview days are where the fair's reputation as a marketplace is made. Much of the most sought-after work is placed in the opening hours of Wednesday, long before the public arrives on Friday. Entry is by invitation, extended by the fair's VIP relations team and by the exhibiting galleries on behalf of their clients.
For a guest without a history at the fair, the most reliable route is a relationship: a gallery from which you have acquired work, or an art advisor who attends each year. Requests are best made in early autumn. In the week before the fair, galleries circulate previews of what they are bringing to the clients they know, and arriving with a shortlist changes the character of the first morning entirely.
Thursday evening belongs to the Art Basel Awards. The Gold Awardees are announced on December 3 at the New World Center in Miami Beach, in the second edition of a program introduced in 2025.
The public days have their own advantages. The pace is slower, the dealers have more time to talk, and the Conversations program, which this year devotes a full day to the relationship between art and sport, runs alongside the fair.
The Satellite Fairs Worth a Morning
A ring of smaller fairs opens around the main event, most of them a day or two earlier. Four reward the time.

Design Miami, now in its 22nd edition, stands at Convention Center Drive and 19th Street, steps from the main fair. It runs from December 2 to 6, with a preview day on December 1, under the theme Unveiling and the curatorial direction of Charlene Prempeh. For guests with an interest in collectible furniture and lighting, it pairs naturally with our guide to villa interior design.
Untitled Art marks its 15th edition on the sand at Ocean Drive and 12th Street, with 166 galleries and non-profit organizations from 36 countries and territories, 52 of them new to the fair. Its scale allows a full visit in a single morning, and its setting, with the Atlantic a few steps from the entrance, is the most relaxed of the week.
NADA Miami, at Ice Palace Studios on the mainland from December 1 to 5, gathers more than 130 galleries and art spaces, and is where many collectors look for emerging artists before they reach the larger fairs. Art Miami, the city's longest-running contemporary fair, and its sister fair CONTEXT occupy a waterfront site at One Herald Plaza on Biscayne Bay, with a preview on December 1 and public days from December 2 to 6.
A note on timing: Wednesday and Thursday, when Art Basel is open only to invited guests, are the natural days for the satellite fairs. By Friday the attention of the city shifts to the Convention Center.
Beyond the Fairs: Museums, Collections, and Public Art
The city's institutions save their strongest programs for this week. Pérez Art Museum Miami presents Picasso, Klee, Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen alongside Basquiat: Figures, Signs, Symbols and an exhibition of John Baldessari. The Bass, a short walk from the Convention Center, shows Yuko Mohri and Amalia Pica. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami opens exhibitions devoted to Carroll Dunham and Diego Singh.
Two private collections are essential. The Rubell Museum in Allapattah holds one of the largest privately owned collections of contemporary art in the world, and the Margulies Collection in Wynwood presents painting, sculpture, light installations, and kinetic work by Yuko Mohri this season. Both are best seen early in the day, before the fairs open, and it is worth confirming their Art Week hours before setting out.
Two public projects are free to all. The Turrell Art Foundation and Art Basel, with the support of Pace Gallery, will unveil a new body of work by James Turrell outdoors, and in Collins Park the Public Art Fund presents Between Tides, six sculptural ping-pong tables designed by artists and meant to be played. Our Miami concierge can also arrange private gallery tours in Wynwood and the Design District for guests who prefer to see the city's galleries away from the crowds.
Where to Stay for Art Basel Miami Beach
Location shapes the week more than any other decision. The Venetian Islands, a chain of six islands between the mainland and Miami Beach, are the choice of many collectors: the causeway reaches Miami Beach a short drive from the Convention Center, and the bayfront villas have deep-water docks. Mid-Beach offers wider streets, larger lots, and its own waterfront. Star Island gives the greatest privacy. Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, on the mainland, suit guests who want distance from the intensity of the week and do not mind a longer drive.
Two cautions apply. In peak season, bridge traffic can add 20 to 30 minutes to a journey that should take ten, so a residence on the right side of the bay matters. And the finest residences for Art Week are typically reserved a year ahead. Our guide to the best Miami neighborhoods sets out each area in detail.
Getting Around During Art Week
Guests are driven. A dedicated car and driver for the week is the single most useful arrangement, since demand for cars peaks at precisely the hour the previews end. A driver who knows the causeways will choose among them by the time of day.
The water is the quieter route. From a villa with a private dock, a tender or chartered yacht crosses the bay without regard to traffic, and in 2025 the City of Miami Beach also ran a free water taxi between Miami Beach and the mainland during the fair. For arrivals, Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport is the customary choice for private aircraft, while Miami International receives nonstop flights from most major cities.
Dining and Entertaining During the Week
Restaurant tables are the scarcest commodity of the week, and the most sought-after rooms are reserved weeks in advance. Our guide to MICHELIN Star restaurants in Miami covers the fourteen starred restaurants in the 2026 selection. Early December also falls within Florida's stone crab season, which runs from mid-October to the start of May.
Many guests find that the best evening of the week is the one they host. A private chef can serve a seated dinner on the terrace for collectors, dealers, and friends, and our note on whether luxury villas include private chefs explains how this is arranged. The weather cooperates: NOAA's climate normals put the average December high in Miami at 78°F and the low at 64°F, with measurable rain on roughly one day in four.
